How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book under NMFC 117060 at Class 85; no density needed, but include piece count, weight, and external crate dimensions on the BOL.
- Crate to protect steel surfaces: cap steam ports, cover flanges, add 4x4 blocking and chocks so the chamber cannot contact crate walls.
- Design for handling: provide minimum 3.5 in runner clearance for forklifts and mark center of gravity and Do Not Tip on two sides.
- Control moisture: fully drain the vessel, add VCI wrap and desiccant packs, and label any drain or inspection access clearly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing from fixed Class 85 reduces reclass disputes and stabilizes LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, simplifying tendering.
- Damage reduction through proper crating and internal bracing lowers claim rates and deductibles.
- Operational fit for mills and kiln operations: clear NMFC mapping streamlines vendor audits and procurement compliance.
