How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 117140 and Class 100 on the BOL. Note if units are mounted on trucks, KD (knocked down), or without trucks, and whether packed in boxes or crates.
- If mounted on trucks/casters, chock wheels and band the unit to a skid; brace and block inside the crate so the assembly cannot roll or shift in transit.
- For KD shipments, bundle panels and frames, cap sharp edges, and wrap with moisture barrier film; then box or crate and label piece counts for receiving.
- Provide accurate dimensions and weight even though class is fixed; add handling marks like This Side Up and Do Not Tip, and include photos of interior bracing to avoid inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 across mounted, KD, or without-truck configurations reduces reclass bills and speeds carrier rating.
- Choice of boxes or crates lets dairies and OEMs balance protection and cost, cutting claims on stainless food-processing components.
- KD option lowers cube and damage exposure, improving LTL pricing potential without changing the freight class.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and simplifies carrier selection for urgent plant installs and maintenance.
