How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each unit in a rigid box or fully enclosed crate, adding blocking and bracing around pumps, mixers, homogenizers, and CIP skids to prevent vibration during LTL handling.
- Protect sanitary and washdown surfaces: cap all tri-clamp ports, wrap stainless zones with VCI film, and use moisture barriers with desiccant to reduce corrosion risk.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity on the crate; include a packing list and label as “Dairy Machinery NOI – NMFC 117220 – Class 125” for quick terminal identification.
- Remove loose accessories (valves, gauges, small motors) and bag them inside the crate; add shock indicators or tip-n-tell devices for high-value processing modules.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 simplifies quoting and budgeting for dairy equipment moves, reducing surprises from density-based reclassifications.
- Proper boxing or crating protects polished stainless and sanitary finishes, cutting damage rates and downstream cleaning or replacement costs.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds terminal processing and lowers the risk of inspection holds, leading to faster transit and fewer accessorials.
- Compliance with Class 125 packaging expectations reduces reclass fees and claims, improving total landed cost for plant installs or line upgrades.
