How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the exact NMFC sub-item and packaging. Cheese or milk vats typically rate within Class 100–150; verify whether your shipment is boxed or crated to select the correct class.
- Protect sanitary stainless surfaces: cap all ports, bag interior cavities, line crates with clean poly sheeting, and avoid sawdust or loose wood inside the product area.
- Disassemble delicate parts like agitators, valves, sight glasses, and sensors. Pack them in a labeled inner box and brace the main vessel with blocking, bands, and foam to prevent shell deformation.
- Plan handling and footprint: use a 4-way entry skid, mark center-of-gravity and no-lift points, and add shock/tip indicators. Provide outer crate dimensions and weight for accurate LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC selection within the 100–150 range helps prevent reclass fees and delays, especially where the sub-class can depend on packaging and configuration.
- Purpose-built crating reduces damage risk to sanitary finishes and fittings, cutting claim exposure and keeping dairy equipment deployment timelines on track.
- Kitting accessories inside the main crate avoids loose-piece surcharges, shortens dock handling time, and simplifies proof-of-delivery checks.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier availability and streamlines routing, enabling faster quotes and more predictable LTL rates for machinery freight.
