How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use heavy-duty corrugated boxes (double-wall or 44 ECT) sized to immobilize the copper coil and brace the steel pipe with cradles so the assembly cannot roll.
- Moisture-protect copper: bag in poly or VCI film, cap any open tube ends, and add desiccant. Avoid oily inhibitors that could contaminate dairy equipment upon installation.
- Cushion protrusions and bends with foam or honeycomb pads, add corner posts, and mark UP arrows so the pipe supports remain oriented during LTL handling.
- For LTL moves, secure each sealed box to a pallet with banding, and label the BOL with “NMFC 117400, Class 125.” Include clear box dimensions to speed rate quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 eliminates density debates, cutting reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Non-hazardous designation opens more carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Boxed protection limits coil denting and tube-end damage, reducing OS&D claims and downtime for dairies and processing OEMs.
- Clear NMFC mapping (117400) speeds quoting and budgeting for maintenance and replacement parts across multi-location facilities.
