How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain, rinse, and cap all inlets/outlets on aerators, agitators, heaters, and pasteurizers to prevent residue leaks and DOT inspections during LTL transit.
- Mount each unit on a sturdy skid or pallet, block the base, and band through frame points; protect stainless shells with corner protectors and foam wrap.
- Remove or secure fragile items—sight glasses, valves, gauges, control panels—then crate or guard them with plywood panels to avoid impact damage.
- List the unit type and condition on the BOL (e.g., “Milk Pasteurizer, skidded, NMFC 117380, Class 125, non-hazardous”) and note center of gravity for safe handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 125 gives consistent LTL quotes and reduces reclass fees for dairy processing machinery.
- Faster dock moves: Clear NMFC 117380 identification streamlines carrier handling and minimizes delays at terminals.
- Damage reduction: Proper skidding/crating for stainless equipment lowers claims on costly sanitary-grade components.
- Better cost control: Shipping separate or combined units under one item simplifies consolidation and totals fewer accessorials.
