How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm cargo qualifies for NMFC 11760: aircraft or major wing components (ailerons, flaps, nacelles, fuselages with power) packed in rigid boxes or crates.
  2. Engineer the crate for long spans and thin edges: block and brace wing panels, protect leading edges with foam and plywood, and use tip guards on stabilizers.
  3. Mark lift and balance clearly: stencil center-of-gravity, sling points, and “Do Not Lift by Skin” to prevent handling damage to control surfaces.
  4. Prepare power-installed fuselages for non-haz status: drain fuels and oils, cap lines, and include a signed clean-and-dry statement on the BOL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 200 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees on oversized aerospace pieces.
  • Boxed or crated requirement broadens carrier acceptance and cuts OS&D risk for high-value structures like wings and nacelles.
  • Clear NMFC mapping speeds AOG recovery by shortening tender-to-pickup time and improving routing confidence.
  • Proper crate design (forklift pockets, spreader-bar lift points) reduces accessorials for special handling and shortens dock dwell.
