How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use double-wall boxes or sturdy wooden crates with foam blocking to immobilize discs or drums; add edge guards to protect machined surfaces.
- Line metal parts with VCI paper or oil-resistant wrap to prevent corrosion during transit, especially for longer routes or humid climates.
- Record part numbers, serials, and lot codes on the BOL and outer packaging to streamline MRO receiving and traceability for AOG or overhaul work.
- If shipping multiple boxes, band them to a pallet and mark lift points; dense iron/steel parts can shift and damage packaging if not braced.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and prevents density reclass, reducing unexpected carrier adjustments.
- Non-hazardous designation opens more carrier options and faster tendering for urgent MRO and AOG moves.
- Box or crate packaging standardization cuts claims risk and shortens inspection time at maintenance facilities.
- Accurate NMFC use improves quote speed and cost predictability for routine component overhauls and spares replenishment.
