How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging by unit type: cushioned boxes for handheld sheep/goat shears; rigid, braced crates for floor or stand-mounted clippers.
- Immobilize the cutting head and motor. Remove combs and cutters, bag and label them, coil cords, protect switches, and use blade guards to prevent edge damage.
- Block and brace tightly inside the box or crate. Use foam-in-place around the gearbox, secure to a skid, and keep the center of gravity low for forklift handling.
- List “Powered Animal Shearing Machine,” NMFC 117950, and the packaging type (box or crate) on the BOL. Note separately packed stands, drives, or spare blades.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC selection for boxed or crated units reduces reclass and rebill risk, stabilizing freight costs.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies quotes and paperwork, accelerating farm-supply shipments during peak shearing seasons.
- Proper blocking and blade protection lower damage claims and prevent downtime for ranches, wool processors, and mobile shearers.
- Crated heavy units are forklift-friendly and more stackable, helping avoid special-handling fees and improving LTL transit reliability.
