How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your unit is a household electric trash compactor and list it as NMFC 118090, Class 85 to prevent reclass charges.
- Use approved packaging: strong boxes, wood crates, or Packages 1082, 2117, or 2509. Strap the container to a pallet for forklift-safe handling.
- Secure moving parts before packing—lock the drawer, wrap the power cord, and add foam or blocking around the motor housing and ram assembly.
- Ship upright and mark orientation arrows. Example: a 120 lb kitchen compactor in a wood crate on a 40x48 pallet with corner protection and shock-absorbing fill.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at a fixed Class 85—no density math required, faster quoting.
- Correct package selection (1082, 2117, 2509) reduces damage risk and keeps claims low.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat accessorials.
- Accurate NMFC usage minimizes reclass fees and improves on-time performance through clearer carrier handling.
