How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the right pack: heavy-duty boxes with foam and pallet banding for small roasters, or wood crates with blocking/bracing for larger units. Secure the drum, cooling tray, chaff cyclone, and control panels.
- Prepare the machine: lock moving parts, strap the drum and fans, drain any residual oils if present, cap gas/electrical ports, and wrap stainless components and electronics with moisture barrier and VCI protection.
- Label for handling: add tilt and shock indicators, center-of-gravity marks, and clear fork-side arrows. Request liftgate or forklift service when shipping to cafes or roasteries without docks.
- Provide shipment details: even with fixed Class 100, list piece count, packaging type (box or crate), exact outer dimensions, and weight per piece to prevent reweighs or reclass fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and simplifying rate comparisons across carriers.
- Lower damage exposure: proper boxing or crating shields drums, bearings, and control electronics, reducing claims and costly downtime.
- Streamlined compliance: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Operational efficiency: crated roasters are forklift-ready, improving cross-dock flow, carrier acceptance, and potential LTL rate performance.
