How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 118140, Class 85 on the BOL for steam condensers or condenser–pump combinations, and mirror the NOI wording to match carrier tariff language.
- Prepare units by draining water and oil, capping or blanking all nozzles and pump ports, and securing to a skid or crate with blocking that supports the shell and base.
- Shield sensitive fins and tube sheets with foam, edge protectors, and plywood face covers; ship upright, mark center of gravity, and tag lift points for safe rigging.
- Keep the footprint tight to the skid, use VCI wrap for corrosion control, and include serials, drawings, and test reports in a document pouch for receiving and commissioning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable rating and fewer reclass disputes, stabilizing LTL quotes across carriers.
- One listing covers condenser-only or condenser with pump, consolidating lines on the BOL and reducing handling and accessorial exposure.
- Better protection of tube bundles and faces cuts damage risk and claim cycles, accelerating onsite startup for HVAC, power, and process applications.
- Accurate NMFC usage streamlines procurement and project logistics, helping control freight spend and lead times on large equipment moves.
