How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the BOL as “Connecting Rods, worn, for reconditioning or salvage only” and include NMFC 118180, Class 70 to avoid reclass fees.
- Package rods in heavy-duty cartons or wood crates with dividers; bag each rod to contain oil residue and pad the big/small ends to protect journals.
- Drain and wipe parts so they’re dry to the touch; add absorbent sheets inside the package and seal the box to prevent leaks on the dock.
- Bundle caps with their matched rods using zip ties or tape, label engine family or size (e.g., Cummins ISX, LS-series) to streamline core processing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 provides predictable LTL quotes for used cores, simplifying budgeting and rate shopping.
- “Worn/salvage-only” designation ensures you don’t pay higher classes intended for new precision parts.
- Rigorous packaging reduces spill cleanups and damage claims, protecting recovery value and lowering accessorial risk.
- Clear BOL wording and proper containment minimize inspection delays, speeding turnarounds on core returns and rebuild schedules.
