Notes

Note 118201: NOTE-Applies only on buckets, dippers or skips without arms, booms or mounting hardware. For provisions applicable to excavating, grading or loading buckets, dippers or skips equipped with mounting hardware for tractors or trucks, see item 114220, 'Attachments, excavating, grading or loading, NOI, tractor or truck.' For provisions applicable to concrete conveying, dumping or hoisting buckets, with or without attachments, see item 115430, 'Buckets, concrete conveying, dumping or hoisting, with or without attachments.'

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density: weigh the packaged bucket, then divide by the crate or pallet cubic feet (e.g., 1,200 lb ÷ 40 cu ft = 30 pcf). Use this to set class.
  2. Package per Item 170: bolt buckets to skids or block inside crates, band securely, and cap teeth or cutting edges to prevent punctures.
  3. Improve density and stability by nesting smaller buckets inside larger ones or removing detachable couplers and shipping them inside the crate.
  4. Mark center of gravity and provide forklift clearance; avoid overhang on 40x48 pallets to keep measurements true and prevent accessorials.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density classification avoids reclass/reweigh fees and streamlines quoting.
  • Nesting and compact crating raise pcf, which can lower class and reduce LTL rates.
  • Edge and ear protection reduces damage claims, downtime, and replacement purchases.
  • Clear Item 170 compliance and labeling speed carrier handling and cut detention risk.
