How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify your freight fits NMFC 118300: complete cotton compress shipped knocked down, or iron/steel parts. Mark the BOL with “KD” or “parts” and include piece counts.
- Secure packaging: bolt frames to skids or crates, band cylinders and tie rods, cap hydraulic ports, and protect machined faces with VCI wrap and edge guards. Keep longest pieces under 96 inches to avoid oversize fees.
- Plan handling: use forklifts or cranes rated for concentrated weight, mark center of gravity, and block/brace to prevent metal-on-metal abrasion. Do not stack on hydraulic or control components.
- Quote accurately: apply fixed Class 85 (no density) for LTL. Example BOL line: “1 skid, 1,100 lb cotton compress frame, NMFC 118300, Class 85.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Fixed Class 85 minimizes reweigh/reclass disputes and helps avoid inspection fees.
- Consolidation advantages: KD units and spare parts can ride under one NMFC, reducing minimum charges and extra handling costs.
- Competitive machinery pricing: Class 85 often prices better than generic machinery tiers, improving margins on gin rebuilds and off‑season maintenance projects.
- Lower claims risk: Steel-focused packaging (banding, blocking, VCI) prevents scuffs and bent tie rods, protecting uptime at gins and repair shops.
