How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender under NMFC 118420 at Class 85; choose sturdy boxes for small parts (screens, grid bars) and fully blocked, braced crates for complete cotton cleaner assemblies.
- Clean and cap equipment before packing to contain lint and dust; bag sharp or toothed components (e.g., saw cylinders) and protect bearings with foam or corrugated edge guards.
- Build 4-way forklift access into crates, mark center of gravity, and band to skids; for tall sections, add tilt/impact indicators to deter rough handling in LTL.
- Label parts lists and serials on the exterior for quick receiving; photograph packing before pickup and request liftgate or appointment if the gin or shop lacks a dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies pricing—no density calculations—speeding quotes and reducing rating disputes for cotton gin operations.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions, improving capacity during peak harvest shipments.
- Durable boxes/crates improve stackability and minimize damage to delicate screens and fans, lowering claim risk and downtime costs.
- Consistent classification across machinery and parts enables centralized purchasing and predictable budgets for maintenance and rebuild programs.
