How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify each part’s build and packaging: box small bearings and seals, crate heavy sprockets or gear cases, and palletize bundles of chain; avoid loose pieces when possible to keep classes lower.
- Prep for clean, stable transit: drain or cap lubricated housings, bag metal parts with VCI or poly to limit rust, and use edge protectors plus banding around crates or cartons.
- Label the BOL with NMFC 118440 and the packaging form (boxes, crates, packages, or loose) and list part numbers; add photos at pickup to support claims or reclass disputes.
- For gin operators and dealers, consolidate multiple SKUs onto one pallet with a top sheet and corner boards; block sprocket teeth and secure chain loops with wrap to prevent abrasion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce freight spend by choosing boxed or crated packing that typically fits lower classes within the 77.5–125 range, improving LTL rates.
- Cut reclass fees and admin time by matching NMFC 118440 and accurately declaring packaging type on the BOL.
- Lower damage risk with proper blocking and crating, keeping cotton-handling equipment online and avoiding costly downtime during harvest.
- Simplify carrier selection and speed tendering since these parts are nonhazardous and need no hazmat paperwork.
