How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify whether the flues ship as packages or loose and list that on the BOL; packaging choice determines the class within the 85–100 range.
- Protect long wooden flues from splitting: cap the ends, add corner guards, and band to skids or crate with internal blocking to stop flexing.
- Measure overall length carefully; pieces over 8–12 ft can trigger LTL length surcharges—bundle sections to a standard pallet footprint when possible.
- Because this is item-based (not density-based), keep dimensions on file for rating and cubic checks, and include NMFC 118500 on paperwork for quick approval.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-size packaging can place the shipment at the more favorable end of the 85–100 class range, improving LTL rates on every move.
- Purposeful bracing and end protection reduce damage claims on long wooden components, cutting OS&D costs and preventing project delays during gin maintenance season.
- Clear NMFC and packaging status (packages vs loose) on the BOL limits reclass fees, inspections, and rebills from carriers.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, keeping rural deliveries to cotton gins and rebuilders cost-effective.
