How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging by piece size: box short straight sections and fittings; crate long runs, elbows, and assemblies to prevent bending and edge damage.
- Cap or tape all open ends, add corner protectors, and block/bracethe flues inside the box or crate; band to a skid to avoid rolling or punctures.
- Measure the longest section carefully (e.g., 8–12 ft segments) and confirm your carrier’s over-length rules; note any pieces over 96 inches on the BOL.
- Note configuration on paperwork—assembled vs. knocked down, nested sections, and steel gauge—and choose the proper class within 100–125 per NMFC 118480 and packaging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimized packaging can qualify for the lower end of the 100–125 range, trimming LTL rates without risking reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, helping keep projects on schedule during gin or seed mill maintenance.
- Nesting straight sections and boxing smaller parts reduces cube and accessorials, while crating critical elbows cuts damage and claim costs.
- Clear NMFC 118480 labeling and accurate class selection reduce inspections and delays, improving dock throughput and predictability in freight budgets.
