How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is knocked down (KD) and packed in a rigid box or crate to qualify for Class 77.5; loose or bag-only packing can trigger reclass.
- Cushion the distributor body and shaft with dense foam or molded inserts; bag small springs, clips, and hardware in labeled pouches or VCI bags.
- For heavier cast housings, select a wood crate and block and brace internally; add up arrows and keep orientation to protect shafts and caps.
- List on the BOL: NMFC 118560 - Distributors, NOI, KD, boxed or crated; include piece count, pallet count, and any master carton details.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 77.5 mid-tier rating can reduce LTL costs versus higher auto part classes.
- Non-density NMFC simplifies quoting and avoids reweigh and reclass fees when packaged correctly.
- Box or crate requirement lowers transit damage risk, cutting warranty returns and delays.
- Clear NMFC usage speeds carrier routing and improves claim outcomes in automotive supply chains.
