How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 118620, Class 85 for gin feeders; no density entry is needed, which prevents carrier reclasses.
- Package by crating or bolting the base to a sturdy skid; block feed rollers, guard chains and belts, and tag motor leads and lift points.
- Protect electronics and bearings: cover control boxes, cap conduit openings, wrap exposed shafts, and use VCI paper where corrosion is a concern.
- Plan handling: list weight and center of gravity, ensure forklift capacity at pickup/delivery, and avoid liftgates for oversized feeder assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating streamlines quotes and reduces surprise reclass or inspection fees.
- Non-hazardous designation simplifies routing and minimizes special handling surcharges.
- Crated or skidded machinery travels better in LTL, lowering damage risk and claim costs.
- Clear, fixed classification speeds seasonal gin maintenance logistics and keeps lines running.
