How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify if you’re shipping a full tramper assembly or individual cotton packer parts; use NMFC 118680 for both and note part names on the BOL.
- Bolt base frames to sturdy skids and block moving heads; cap hydraulic ports and wrap exposed rams or sensor leads. Example: 48x96 skid with steel banding.
- Mark center of gravity and use lift eyes where provided; keep control cabinets upright and avoid stacking spare plates or baskets on control panels.
- Label Do Not Tip and record serial numbers and service weight on paperwork; photograph packaging to speed claims resolution if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single, fixed Class 70 rating simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk versus density-based machinery items.
- Correct NMFC usage helps terminals route as machinery, supporting on-time delivery during cotton harvest peaks.
- Robust skidding and blocking cut in-transit damage for heavy rural drays, lowering claim costs and downtime.
- Mid-tier class often improves cost per cwt while maintaining straightforward insurance and handling expectations.
