How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Cradle the shaft with V-blocks or foam saddles inside a box or crate, and protect the saw teeth with edge guards or plywood rings so the blades cannot bite through packaging.
- Oil the metal and add VCI wrap plus desiccants to prevent rust; seal boxes tightly or use a lag-bolted crate if the cylinder length exceeds standard pallet depth.
- Bolt the assembly to a skid or through the crate base to stop roll and shift; mark center of gravity and lift points for safe forklift handling.
- List NMFC 118700, Class 77.5 on the BOL and note packaging (box or crate). Request non-stack or top-load only if teeth or shaft ends could be damaged.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 77.5 reduces reclass risk and helps you quote LTL lanes with confidence.
- Faster tendering: Non-hazardous machinery part means simpler paperwork and fewer carrier restrictions.
- Lower claims: Proper crating and blade guarding cut damage rates, protecting high-value cotton gin uptime during peak harvest.
- Smarter consolidation: Multiple cylinders secured in one engineered crate can improve cube efficiency and reduce per-unit freight cost.
