How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 118780 and Class 85 on the BOL; note “lint condensers, with or without bottoms; boxed/crated; supports loose or packaged” to prevent reclass inspections.
- Use rigid wood crates or double-wall boxes with internal blocking to protect mesh screens and flanges; avoid strapping directly across media; add Up/Do Not Stack cues if needed.
- If supports ship loose, bundle and band them, bag small hardware, and label “Support Kit – 1 of X.” When possible, secure bundles to the main unit’s pallet for single handling.
- Seal openings, wrap in poly, and add desiccants to keep lint traps and housings dry and clean—critical for textile mills, laundries, and dust-collection retrofits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces density disputes, improving budgeting and bid accuracy for maintenance or new installs.
- Proper crating/boxing reduces OS&D claims and prevents screen deformation, cutting replacement costs and downtime at the receiving plant.
- Clear separation and labeling of supports speeds receiving and installation, minimizing lost-part searches and technician idle time.
- Accurate classification (NMFC 118780) helps avoid reclass fees and transit delays, keeping project milestones on track.
