How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this NOI when no more specific crane/derrick item applies. List machine type, boom length, mounting style, and counterweight details on the BOL for accurate rating.
- If shipping LTL, disassemble into booms, house, and counterweights; place on heavy-duty skids. Band, block, and brace; protect cylinder rods and control panels; mark center of gravity.
- For flatbed or oversize moves, provide exact dimensions, securement points, and lift plan. Request permits and escorts when required, and specify tarping for hydraulics and electronics.
- Drain fuel where applicable, cap hydraulic lines, and isolate batteries to maintain non-hazard status. Include photos, serial numbers, and weight per piece to speed carrier approval.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NOI usage reduces reclass and rebill risk, keeping quote-to-invoice variance low.
- Breaking units into standardized, skidded components often enables LTL or standard flatbed, cutting linehaul and specialized heavy-haul charges.
- Clear securement and CG documentation shortens loading time, lowering detention and improving dock throughput.
- Proper blocking, bracing, and protection of hydraulics minimizes OS&D claims, reducing downtime and warranty disputes.
