How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your machine fits the scope: crushers, breakers, or grinders for coal, ore, or stone; combined crusher–elevator assemblies are included. Use NMFC 119080 on the BOL.
- Mount the unit to a steel or hardwood skid, block and brace to stop shifting, and guard infeed/outfeed openings. Mark lift points and center of gravity for safe handling.
- Remove or secure wear parts (jaw plates, hammers, liners). Bag hardware and accessories and ship with the main unit, labeled as accessories under the same NMFC item.
- Skip density math—the class is fixed at 77.5. Provide accurate weight and overall dimensions for capacity planning, and arrange proper loading gear (forklift or crane).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 77.5 eliminates density-based reclass charges and surprises on invoices.
- Broad coverage: crusher-elevator combinations rate under the same item, reducing misclassification risk and multi-line BOL complexity.
- Faster quoting and routing: a single, specific NMFC simplifies carrier rating, improves tender speed, and streamlines claims verification.
- No hazmat surcharges: this non-hazardous machinery is widely accepted by LTL carriers, expanding options and improving capacity access.
