How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm overall length, weight, and section count before quoting; note if any piece exceeds common over-length triggers (8 ft, 12 ft, 20 ft) to plan special handling.
- Secure sections to an engineered skid or pipe rack with blocking and steel banding; cap sharp ends, protect edges, and add VCI wrap or corrosion paper when storing outdoors.
- Write a precise BOL description: steel derrick bases/booms/legs/masts or sills, piece count, packaging type (skidded, racked, crated), longest dimension, and total weight.
- Stack multiple sections with dunnage spacers and through-bands to prevent metal-to-metal abrasion; keep lengths uniform per stack and mark center of gravity for crane picks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate specs and clear BOL language reduce reclass and inspection fees on long, rigid steel machinery parts.
- Proper blocking and edge protection cut in-transit damage, lowering replacement and downtime costs at job sites.
- Planning for over-length and lift requirements upfront avoids surprise accessorials and accelerates terminal handling.
- Consolidating sections on a single engineered skid improves cube efficiency and lowers LTL linehaul and handling charges.
