How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item matches NMFC 11950: deflated pneumatic aircraft escape or evacuation slides with gas‑charged cylinder actuator assemblies in boxes; review Note, item 11951 for any configuration exceptions.
- Use rigid, double‑wall boxes with foam cradles or custom blocking to immobilize cylinders and firing heads. Install OEM safety pins/caps, add “This Side Up” and “Do Not Crush” labels, and avoid top‑stacking.
- Prepare hazmat documentation: list NMFC 11950 and Class 150 on the BOL, declare hazardous materials per the SDS, include an emergency contact, and apply required orientation and hazard labels on the box.
- Book a hazmat‑authorized LTL carrier and flag any AOG or time‑critical needs. Consider insurance for high‑value safety equipment and request liftgate or inside delivery where airport/MRO docks require.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 150 rating—no density calculation—speeds quoting and prevents rating disputes.
- Proper hazmat declaration for gas‑charged actuators reduces reclass fees, refusals, and terminal holds.
- Boxed, immobilized packaging minimizes damage to costly safety gear, lowering OS&D and cycle‑time at MROs.
- Clear NMFC mapping supports airline and repair‑station compliance, enabling faster AOG recovery and less downtime.
