How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item fits the listing: carbon or carbon‑composition brake discs, packed in boxes. Reference NMFC 11970, Class 0 on the BOL and label packaging as “boxes.”
- Use rigid double‑wall boxes with foam rings or honeycomb spacers to immobilize each disc. Wrap to prevent carbon dust transfer and add desiccant plus a moisture barrier liner.
- Palletize boxed discs flat with no overhang, then strap and stretch‑wrap. Apply “Do Not Stack” if supplier specs call for it and keep forks from piercing box walls.
- Document part numbers and program (e.g., MRO lot) on labels. Choose LTL carriers experienced in aerospace components, verify export paperwork for international moves, and insure high‑value loads.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 0 rating eliminates density calculations, reducing reweighs and reclass charges.
- Boxed‑only packaging standardizes handling, lowering damage risk on brittle carbon parts and cutting claim exposure.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork delays.
- Clear NMFC mapping (11970) speeds quoting and routing, supporting fast AOG and routine MRO shipments.
