NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Book at Class 70 for air brake driers packed in boxes or crates; note “contains desiccant cartridges” on the BOL to prevent hazmat mix-ups.
  2. Cap or plug inlet/outlet ports, wrap the canister to keep desiccant dry, and cushion the body so cartridges don’t rattle during LTL handling.
  3. For used/reman units, remove loose brackets, secure to a plywood base, and block inside the crate to avoid punctures or port damage.
  4. Use double‑wall boxes for lighter single units; choose wood crates with internal bracing for multi-packs or heavier assemblies.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 means no density calculation—faster quoting and fewer rating disputes.
  • Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and carrier limitations, stabilizing LTL costs.
  • Box or crate packaging reduces damage risk to threaded ports and desiccant cartridges, lowering claim exposure.
  • Clear NMFC mapping streamlines procurement and replenishment for fleets, OEMs, and parts distributors.
