How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the unit type when quoting—tray drier, belt drier, rotary drum, or food evaporator—and list attached burners, pumps, and control panels so carriers plan correct handling.
- Secure internals before pickup: lock doors and latches, strap or remove trays, immobilize drums, and cap all sanitary ports to protect seals and prevent contamination.
- Match protection to build: fully crate countertop dehydrators; block-and-brace skid-mounted industrial driers; add moisture barrier, shrink wrap, and desiccant for sensitive controls.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity clearly; call out top-heavy loads and request additional strapping or corner protection. Weigh accessories packed in separate crates for accurate BOLs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Using the correct NMFC reference for food driers/dehydrators reduces reclass and rebill exposure, stabilizing LTL quotes for food processors and OEMs.
- Clear packaging notes (crated vs. skid-mounted) help carriers dispatch the right equipment, cutting accessorials and shortening dwell at plant docks.
- Damage and claim reduction from secured doors, capped sanitary connections, and braced frames preserves hygiene standards and avoids costly refurbishment.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and supports faster scheduling, improving throughput during seasonal production peaks.
