How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure each drum on a skid or pallet with cradle blocks and chocks to prevent rolling; band through the hub or arbor holes rather than around the flanges.
- Protect grooves and machined flanges with edge guards and plywood face covers; add VCI wrap or oil paper if the shipment may encounter moisture or ocean legs.
- Mark center of gravity and preferred lift points; use fork extensions or an overhead lift bar to avoid tine contact with the drum edges.
- Confirm drums are empty and drained of oils; list part numbers and finish on the BOL. Class 85 applies without density data, simplifying rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85—no density calculations or reclass surprises.
- Reduced damage and claims by crating or skidding drums properly, protecting grooves and flanges.
- Consolidate multiple drums under one NMFC to streamline quoting and leverage better LTL rates.
- Faster dock turns and fewer accessorials when lift points and center of gravity are clearly labeled.
