NMFC Description Class
12000.00 Floats or Pontoons, NOI, in boxes or crates 400

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use this when shipping aircraft floats or pontoons that are boxed or crated; it does not cover boat dock pontoons or loose pieces.
  2. Build a rigid crate with internal cradles at bulkheads; add closed‑cell foam, vapor barrier wrap for aluminum, and tie‑downs to prevent racking.
  3. Add forklift skids and labeled lift points; mark Do Not Stack and Wide Load for long assemblies. Example: ship a 20‑ft pair as two secured crates.
  4. Provide exact dimensions and weight per crate for carrier planning, plus model/serial numbers and packing photos to expedite inspections and any claims.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 400 eliminates density calculations, accelerating quotes and tariff setup.
  • Crating to NMFC expectations reduces reclass charges, damage risk, and claim exposure.
  • Non‑hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges or special endorsements.
  • Recognize premium pricing at Class 400; mitigate via partial TL, volume LTL, or FAK programs when lanes allow.
