How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Label each piece as SU section or KD unit on the BOL and crate, and mark the center of gravity on long truss sections for safer handling.
- Crate balustrades, steps, and drive components with rigid blocking; secure motors and gearboxes to skids using 4x4 cribbing and through-bolts to prevent shift.
- Plan handling for oversize lengths: keep height under 84 in when possible and request forklift extensions or side loading for sections over 12 ft.
- Combine chains, rollers, controllers, and small spares into sturdy packages and list as Parts NOI under NMFC 120875 to maintain Class 100.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable spend: fixed Class 100 rating speeds quoting and budgeting for installers and OEMs.
- Lower reclass risk: correct SU/KD and Parts NOI documentation reduces inspections and billing adjustments.
- Simplified project logistics: one NMFC covers full escalator systems and spares, enabling phased deliveries to job sites.
- Fewer damages and claims: proper crating and bracing for long, heavy sections cut OS&D and warranty costs.
