How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain all liquids, purge lines, and lock out the rotor or bowl. Strap lids and doors closed, mark Keep Upright and Center of Gravity to prevent imbalance issues.
- Bolt the base to a solid skid and block under the frame. Add cross-bracing so the drum cannot shift axially; use shock/tilt indicators for precision bearings.
- Crate for LTL using ISPM-15 lumber when exporting, and wrap stainless or composite units with VCI or heavy shrink to resist corrosion and scuffing.
- Reference NMFC 120940 (NOI) on paperwork. List make/model, materials (stainless, cast iron, composite), exact weight and dimensions, and note Non-Hazardous—drained and cleaned.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower reclass risk by matching the NOI description and showing clear, durable crating and securement methods.
- Avoid hazmat surcharges and delays by documenting that the centrifuge was drained, purged, and shipped clean.
- Reduce damage claims: immobilizing the drum and isolating vibration protect expensive bearings and controls.
- Faster, sharper quotes: carriers price more confidently when NMFC 120940, packaging, and footprint are clearly stated.
