How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 120960 and Class 125 on the BOL; this item is a fixed-class machinery listing, so no density calculation is required.
- Choose crates for large powered extractors; for boxed units, use double-wall cartons with rigid blocking around the drum, shafts, and spigots. Example: pad a 20-gallon stainless model with foam corners and brace the honey gate.
- Prep the unit: drain and wipe honey/wax residue, latch lids, cap ports, and bag small parts (legs, baskets, strainers) in a separate inner box to prevent abrasion.
- Mark orientation and center of gravity; add ‘Do Not Stack’ and shock/tilt indicators. Provide forklift access for crated pieces to avoid puncturing the drum.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 125 reduces reclass charges and speeds LTL quoting.
- Cleaner, well-blocked packaging cuts damage risk on stainless drums and motors, lowering claims and downtime for apiaries and bottling operations.
- Using crates for heavier extractors prevents punctures and denting, often cheaper than repairing food-contact equipment after mishandling.
- Clear NMFC coding simplifies audits and carrier acceptance, improving on-time pickups during seasonal honey flows.
