How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the parts clearly on the BOL: “Iron or steel heads/ends, stands or legs, side bars or beams – NMFC 121110, Class 70.” Avoid mixing with hardware or fasteners on the same skid.
- Bundle bars or beams with steel strapping and corner protectors, then palletize. Use dunnage between layers to prevent metal-to-metal abrasion and allow forklift tines to enter safely.
- For long members (over 96 in), flag overlength on the BOL and use two-point support with blocks to reduce flex. Band to skids at multiple points to stop shifting.
- Protect coated or machined faces on heads/ends with corrugated wrap or end caps, and shrink-wrap the unitized load to keep labels visible for scanning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk, giving predictable LTL rates for steel structural components.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, accelerating tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Proper unitization (bundled and palletized) minimizes damage claims on heavy iron/steel pieces, cutting replacement and downtime costs.
- Clear NMFC 121110 labeling supports faster carrier acceptance and fewer inspections, improving on-time performance and dock throughput.
