How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stack plates flat on robust hardwood skids with at least three runners; place VCI or rubber pads between layers, add edge protectors, and band tightly with steel or heavy poly strapping.
- Nest iron/steel cake frames with wood spacers, then shrink-wrap to keep the bundle rigid. For a 48×48 stack, band in two directions every 18–24 inches.
- Mark total weight and center of gravity on two sides; cap sharp corners and ensure fork access from multiple sides to reduce cross-dock handling risk.
- On the BOL, describe as “Plates or Cake Frames, iron or steel — NMFC 121120, Class 70, non-haz” to prevent reclass and speed carrier processing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating delivers predictable quotes and reduces reweigh/reclass fees common with density-based items.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and minimizes special paperwork or surcharges.
- Proper bundling and stackable skids improve trailer cube utilization, lowering cost per hundredweight on LTL moves.
- Edge protection and corrosion control (VCI, oil paper) cut damage claims and avoid costly delivery delays.
