How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid cartons or crates with internal bracing; cap inlets/outlets and protect mounting flanges to prevent flexing or point-load cracks during LTL handling.
- Note NMFC 12140 and Class 300 on the BOL, include exact dimensions and weight, and add clear “Do Not Stack” labeling if the plastic hopper could deform under top load.
- Ensure hoppers are clean and dry; if previously used with ag chemicals, rinse and document to avoid hazmat questions and to keep the non-hazardous status.
- When shipping from rural airstrips or service shops, request liftgate or appointment service and choose carriers familiar with aircraft components in the Aircraft Group.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 300 with a single-item rating speeds quoting and reduces reclass disputes—no density calculation required.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat surcharges when the hopper is cleaned, cutting accessorial costs.
- Proper packaging and bracing minimize transit damage, lowering claim risk and protecting high-value aircraft spray equipment.
- Optimized crate and pallet footprints can reduce cubic minimum and oversize fees, improving LTL freight rates for bulky plastic hoppers.
