How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender as NMFC 12150 at Class 200; print both the NMFC item and class on the BOL to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Pack each instrument in a foam cradle inside a double-wall box; immobilize the gyro using the OEM shipping lock if available, and add shock/tilt indicators on the carton.
- Label clearly: “This Side Up” and “Precision Aircraft Instrument.” Avoid pallet overhang and use a snug master carton for multi-piece shipments.
- Declare value and request carrier handling notes for avionics; when delivering to FBOs or MRO hangars, confirm dock access and delivery windows in advance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate Class 200 assignment minimizes reclass fees and disputes, keeping avionics shipments on schedule.
- Non-hazardous status reduces paperwork and helps secure faster pickups and transit commitments.
- Consistent, box-only classification streamlines quoting across carriers, improving rate shopping and budget predictability for MROs and avionics distributors.
- Damage-reducing packaging guidance lowers claims risk and protects high-value instruments, cutting costly AOG downtime.
