How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 121550, Class 65, and note “in packages” on the BOL; reference Note item 121552 when applicable to match the instrument design.
- Use double-wall cartons or wood crates with foam or molded inserts to isolate the flat glass from the heavy steel body; sleeve each glass pane and add edge guards.
- Drain and clean the gage, cap all ports with plugs, secure loose hardware, then wrap the steel housing to prevent abrasion; label “Glass—Handle With Care” and orientation arrows.
- For multi-piece shipments, keep each unit packaged separately and unitize to a pallet with strapping and stretch film; place corner boards and “Do Not Stack” cones to deter top load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 65 rating—no density calculation—reducing reclass risk and invoice disputes.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving total landed cost.
- Purpose-built packaging guidance lowers breakage of flat glass and damage to steel bodies, cutting claims and reshipments.
- Clear NMFC tie-in (121550 with Note 121552) speeds carrier audits and accelerates rate approvals for machinery-grade instruments.
