How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid boxes with dense foam to immobilize gauges and transmitters; cap all pressure ports and protect dial faces or probes with guards.
- For carton-in-crate jobs, anchor the inner carton with blocking and braces so sensitive instruments (e.g., temperature controllers) can’t shift in transit.
- When using protective shipping drums, suspend the device with inserts; avoid over-tightened bands and mark orientation for liquid-filled gauges.
- Palletize boxes or drums on 4-way pallets with no overhang; add corner boards and show NMFC 121570, Class 100 on the BOL to prevent reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at fixed Class 100, simplifying quotes and budgeting for instrumentation moves.
- No density-based class shifts—correct packaging (box, drum, or crated carton) keeps the shipment aligned with the NMFC rule.
- Lower reclass and claim risk when you match the described packaging, improving carrier acceptance and cycle times.
- Covers cross-industry instruments (auto, HVAC, process control), letting teams consolidate under one NMFC for cleaner routing and billing.
