How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package by build and weight: use sturdy boxes for small fuel‑system parts (carburetor kits, injectors) and wood crates for heavier modules like transfer pumps or housings.
- Keep it dry and clean: no liquid fuel ships with the parts. Purge and bag components, then note “No Liquid Contents—Non‑Hazmat” on the BOL to avoid hazmat confusion.
- Confirm subclass selection: verify whether your item rates at class 100 or 125 under NMFC 121680; e.g., boxed service parts vs. crated machinery assemblies.
- Protect precision faces: add internal blocking/bracing, VCI wrap, and corner protection. Mark orientation and handling cues to limit impact and odor transfer.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable mid-range rating (Class 100–125) simplifies LTL quotes and makes carrier comparisons more reliable.
- Non-hazardous listing removes hazmat surcharges and paperwork, accelerating pickup, transit approvals, and dock throughput.
- Correct boxing/crating cuts OS&D on sensitive fuel-system components, reducing replacements, returns, and warranty exposure.
- Clear NMFC citation on the BOL minimizes reclass/reweigh disputes and helps prevent surprise invoice adjustments.
