How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the correct subclass: standalone gas mixer or mixer + regulator assembly, then quote within Class 100–125 per NMFC rather than using density.
- Cap and plug all inlets/outlets, keep oxygen-service parts oil-free in bags, then double-box with foam for bench units; crate panel-mounted manifolds with shock blocks.
- Detail the build on the BOL—gas service (O2/Ar/CO2), connection sizes, and any fragile gauges—so handlers stage properly and avoid reclass audits.
- Add orientation and no-pressure labels: Keep Upright, Do Not Pressurize, Sensitive Instruments; band crates to pallets for safe forklift handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Pre-set Class 100–125 streamlines rating and minimizes surprise reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat paperwork and surcharges, cutting total shipping cost.
- Appropriate boxing or crating protects calibration, reducing damage claims and downtime for welding shops and labs.
- Accurate subclass choice (mixer vs mixer+regulator) speeds tendering and keeps LTL quotes consistent across carriers.
