How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 121730 and Class 92.5 on the BOL and labels; density is not required for this machinery item. Specify the exact unit (e.g., “gas house condenser with fixtures”).
- Prepare the unit: drain and purge, cap all nozzles, and secure valves and gauges. Protect fragile internals like superheater coils and tube bundles with foam and bracing.
- Package for rigging: bolt the base to a steel or hardwood skid, add blocking/cross‑bracing, mark center of gravity, and apply tilt/shock indicators. Example: crate a 1,800‑lb scrubber with 4x4 runners for forklift clearance.
- Book appropriate equipment: choose an LTL carrier familiar with machinery, request ‘Do Not Top Load,’ and use tarping if moving on flatbed. For oversized purifiers or producers, shift to partial truckload.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 rating reduces reclass risk and dispute charges, improving quote accuracy and budgeting.
- Nonhazardous designation expands carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Coverage explicitly includes fixtures, minimizing surprise re-rating when controls, piping, or frames stay attached.
- Machinery Group placement streamlines consolidation with other equipment, speeding tenders and producing competitive LTL rates.
