How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each unit weighs under 5 lb. For multi-pack cartons, note per-unit weights on the BOL and declare Class 77.5 to avoid reclass.
- Box or crate gear/speed reducers and parts NOI with dense foam or honeycomb blocking. Bag lubricated parts, cap shafts, and prevent gear teeth from rubbing.
- For hydromatic braking machines, use a skid when needed: band tightly with edge protectors, shrink-wrap, and keep the center of gravity low and balanced.
- Mark part numbers and orientation arrows on packaging. Include NMFC 121870 and Class 77.5 on labels and documents so carriers code it correctly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 77.5 for light gear drives reduces density disputes and surprise invoices.
- Lower damage risk: boxed/crated small reducers and skidded braking units travel safely through LTL hubs, cutting claims and reship costs.
- Faster quoting and booking: carriers know NMFC 121870, speeding up rate responses and pickups for maintenance and OEM replenishment.
- Consolidation ready: mix assorted small reducers or parts NOI in one master carton, provided each item is under 5 lb, streamlining warehouse workflows.
