How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each unit weighs 5 lb or more; list piece count and per-piece weight on the BOL to secure Class 70 without density calculations.
- Package in a sturdy box or wood crate with blocking. Cap or plug input/output shafts and ports, and add VCI wrap to protect machined faces.
- If shipping on a skid, bolt the housing through mounting feet or use steel banding over lumber cleats so the reducer cannot shift or tip.
- Describe precisely: "Gear/speed reducer" or "right angle pump drive, no motor, boxed/crated" and include NMFC 121875 on paperwork for clean rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 70 avoids density swings and reclass penalties common with irregular machinery.
- Wider carrier acceptance: boxed or crated packaging aligns with LTL best practices, improving quote accuracy and transit reliability.
- Lower damage risk: shaft protection, internal blocking, and skid tie-downs reduce claim exposure and replacement lead times.
- Operational flexibility: shipping drives without motors keeps weight down and leverages Class 70 for OEMs, rebuilders, and MRO distributors.
