How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 121940 and Class 85 on the BOL so carriers bill correctly and avoid reclass fees for steam governors.
- Use a sturdy wood crate or double‑wall box with interior blocking; immobilize the spindle and flyweights with foam or bolted brackets.
- Palletize the container and brace it to prevent roll or tip; mark Keep Upright and Fragile to protect precision assemblies.
- Bag and cap oil ports, wrap exposed shafts, and include part/serial numbers and service notes inside the container for receiving teams.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 (non‑density) simplifies rating, reducing disputes and unexpected reweigh/reclass charges.
- Non‑hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or specialized handling fees.
- Proper crating and blocking cut damage risk on delicate governor mechanisms, lowering OS&D claims and downtime.
- Clear NMFC mapping under the Machinery Group speeds quoting and enables predictable LTL consolidation with other machine parts.
