How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Crate or heavy-skid each iron gate with 4‑way forklift entry. Block the frame, add corner protectors, and shield the sealing face with plywood and foam. Example: 48×48×30 in, 820 lb gate banded to a 48×60 skid with two steel straps.
- Secure actuators, stems, or lifting eyes so nothing protrudes. Remove loose hardware, bag and bolt it to the frame, then mark center of gravity and lift points for safe handling.
- Control moisture on iron surfaces: wrap, add VCI paper or desiccant for long hauls, and cap any ports to keep grit out. Use stretch wrap only after banding to maintain rigidity.
- List full specifics on the BOL: “Iron head/sluice gate, crated on skid, non-haz,” with exact weight and dimensions plus photos. This helps carriers rate correctly and prevents reclass disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Minimize leak-related rework by protecting the gate seat and guides, reducing impact damage and keeping waterworks projects on schedule.
- Achieve steadier pricing without a fixed class by providing density, packaging, and commodity details so carriers can rate under machinery programs or FAK deals.
- Speed jobsite unloading with forkable crates, cutting detention and avoiding costly crane time for municipal or industrial installations.
- Consolidate stems, actuators, and fasteners in the same crate to avoid split shipments, extra minimum charges, and additional PROs.
