How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging: sealed boxes for smaller heads, or open-top wire-bound wooden crates on skids for heavy or oversized units to maintain Class 70 and streamline handling.
- Protect machined faces and ports—cap all hydraulic ports, apply VCI or rust inhibitor, and brace with hardwood blocking or foam to stop in-transit movement.
- Band to skids with steel or heavy poly strapping, add edge protectors, then mark weight, center of gravity, and orientation; use “Do Not Stack” where needed.
- Book LTL under NMFC 122750, note non-hazardous status, and request liftgate or forklift-compatible skids if the pickup or delivery lacks a dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 70—no density math, fewer reclass fees, and cleaner quotes.
- Damage reduction through approved crating or boxed-on-skid methods tailored for heavy steel components.
- Simplified compliance and faster tendering since the freight is non-hazardous and widely recognized by carriers.
- Quicker routing across LTL networks familiar with NMFC 122750, improving transit reliability for machinery spares.
